Probably the most well-known flavoured tea is Earl Grey, which gets its unmistakable scent and taste thanks to the addition of bergamot aroma.

In the course of tea history, various ways of flavouring black tea were found:

  • Black tea was flavoured with jasmine or rose blossoms as early as ancient China. Teas refined using this method are still available today.
  • Essential oils have been extracted from plants since the 19th century. These are also used, among other things, to flavour tea, such as the Earl Grey variety.
  • The third option is to add spices. A method derived from Indian chai: the black tea is enriched with vanilla, cinnamon, ginger or cardamom.
